• Investors could learn from golf, particularly putting, to improve their performance in the financial markets. • A study published in the Journal of Frontiers in Psychology examined the brain activity of golfers during putting strokes. Researchers found that good putts were associated with better mental preparation and more efficient brain activity.

Lessons for investors

Just as a golfer might hesitate before a putt for fear of failure, investors tend to overestimate potential losses compared to gains. This loss aversion can lead to suboptimal decisions. Mastering these emotional reactions is crucial for maintaining mental stamina, essential for both athletes and investors.

Golfers perform best when they have practiced enough to execute their movements reliably under pressure. Similarly, investors should develop and follow a proven strategy.

• Success in golf and investing relies on repeating a proven process.

The study showed that successful putts were those where the golfer fully committed to the swing. This idea can be applied to investing, such as sticking to your strategy even during periods of high market volatility. Sometimes it’s better to wait and do nothing than to rush in without a clear direction.

• The martial art of judo also offers interesting parallels with investing. The fundamental principle of judo, “yield to win,” can be applied to financial markets.

Just as a judoka uses their opponent’s force to their advantage, a savvy investor can capitalize on market movements rather than fight against them. For example, during a stock market correction, instead of panicking and selling, an investor might see it as an opportunity to buy stocks at a discount. This approach, often called “buying on dips,” is similar to how a judoka uses their opponent’s momentum to create a throwing technique.

• The marathon, meanwhile, illustrates the importance of endurance and long-term planning in investing.

As renowned investor Warren Buffett explains:

The stock market is a mechanism for transferring money from the impatient to the patient. Just as a marathon runner must manage their energy over 42.2 kilometers, an investor must adopt a long-term perspective, resisting the urge to react impulsively to short-term market fluctuations. Portfolio diversification can be compared to a runner’s strategy of adapting their pace to different sections of the course. This approach allows for better risk management and optimized performance over time.
